Dubai villa rent scam gang jailed for two years
A gang of four men have been jailed for two years after they fraudulently rented out a villa that did not belong to them.
Dubai Court of First Instance sentenced the Pakistanis on Sunday after finding them guilty.
Their scam started in November 2010.
A 40-year-old Filipina property agent told the court: “I received a call from a customer asking me to look for a rental villa in the Barsha area of Dubai. We didn’t have such villa so I started looking for a villa on th internet and I saw an advertisement about a villa for Dhs70,000.
“I called one of the defendants who claimed that he owned the villa and he asked for Dhs35,000 in advance to book it and my customer gave him the money and a cheque for Dhs40, 000. The man then gave us documents and passports showing he was the real owner.”
However, when the customer went to open the villa the key didn’t work. He forced open the door and found a family living inside.
