Driver who caused death of UAE triathlete Roy Nasr jailed for one month
A drunk driver who mowed down and killed champion triathlete Roy Nasr in Dubai has been jailed for one month.
The 24-year-old Filipino was also ordered to pay Dhs200,000 in blood money to Nasr’s family after being found guilty at Dubai Traffic Misdemeanour Court of causing the death of the Lebanese national about 5am on Friday, September 6.
The motorist was convicted of drinking alcohol, drink driving, damaging property, wrongly causing death to Nasr and wrongly causing injuries to two cyclists riding with the 49-year-old near Safa Park at the time. Nasr, a founder member of the group TriDubai, was a past Arab triathlon champion and finished third at the 2011 World Triathlon Championships.
Monday’s verdict provoked anger and bewilderment from those who knew Nasr and triggered a flurry of comments on social media. Dubai triathlete Tony Hchaime said the one-month sentence was “disgusting”. He added: “I don’t know what to say.”
“This makes me angry. What a joke,” Ben McCabe wrote on 7DAYS’ facebook page.
UAE law states that the punishment for drink driving is a Dhs20,000 fine or a jail sentence to be determined by the judge. The penalty for wrongly causing death is a maximum of one year in jail or a fine. For damaging property, guilty verdicts carry a one-year jail term or fine of up to Dhs10,000.
It was confirmed last night that the judge issued the one-month jail sentence to the drink-driver based on all of the charges combined. Dubai Public Prosecution can appeal the decision within the next 15 days. As well as being handed a month in jail and the order to pay blood money, the Filipino driver was also banned from driving for three months.
Nasr was the COO of food firm Abela & Co, but was also a something of hero on the UAE fitness scene. More than 500 people attended his funeral at the St Francis of Assisi church in Jebel Ali earlier this month, including wife Tina, daughter Tala and son Elie.
Tina described her husband as “my love, my hero, my world”.
