Al Wasl have replaced Maradona with Bruno Metsu a week after the Dubai club fired the Argentine great a year before his contract ended.

Al Wasl media office says Metsu signed a two-year contract Tuesday and is joining the team next week. Financial terms of the contract were not revealed.

Maradona was ousted from the club because of its poor performance. Al Wasl finished eighth in the 12-team league last season.

The temperamental Argentine brought much-needed attention to the United Arab Emirates league, but was unable to turn around the Dubai club.

Metsu was the national coach in both the UAE and Qatar and also worked in several clubs in the emirates.

Before coming to the Gulf, the Frenchman reached the quarter final of the 2002 World Cup with Senegal.
